Securing Your World
This may sound simplistic but you need to pay close attention to my checklist to secure a server.
Clearly define the role of the server.
Split the file system tree across multiple partition
Make the root read-only
Password protect your bios
Change system setup to boot only to first hard drive
Be sure the server is located in a physically secure area.
Perform a system and user audit checks
Secure file system
Examine DNS and bind
Safeguard TCP/IP
Protect NFS and Samba
Secure X Window access
Implement data encryption
Establish a recovery plan
